Grand National System - How you should bet on the biggest race in the world

The Grand National at Aintree is one of the most famous and one of the most gruelling races in the world.

At 4 miles 4 furlongs long the course has seen many great races as well as great tragedy.

Who can forget the furor after the 2011 race in which Ballabriggs won with more than a little use of the whip, the multiple deaths on the course which meant the 2nd course trip was reduced by 2 jumps and the fact that less than half the starters actually finished the race.

I remember first winning the Grand National with Comply or Die in 2008 and then with Ballabriggs in 2011. However to pick a winner out of the large number of runners is a very hard task to achieve but can be made easier by reading the tea leaves that flow from previous winners since the war.

There are lots of ways of trying to narrow down winners but you should remember that this is a big 30-40 runner handicap and anything can happen including:
  • Cheltenham Gold Cup winners falling and unfortunatley dying, like Synchronised in 2012.
  • The majority of runners don't even finish the race. With 40 runners you will be lucky to get 20 to finish.
  • With so many runners in a field unless your runner has stamina and can front run the longest distance around a faller in front of your horse is likely to bring at least one or more other runners down.
  • It's a big handicap and many people either love them or hate them.
  • This is no 6 runner race with a 1/6 favourite like Frankel, Big Bucks or Hurricane Fly running. So there is never a clear pick that will win.
  • You will see many people with lists of ways to pick the winner. However they usually "back fit" the statistics by taking the last 10 or 20 runners and then seeing which statistics match them all. It is easy to find common stats AFTER a race.

You can check out a list of previous Grand National winners here but there are some key points you should remember when picking your horse for the Grand National.

  • Never just pick one horse. The Grand National is more like a lottery than any other race I know of and you should try to pick at least a couple of runners with a good chance and an outsider who has more than half a chance. Not many 200/1 runners win the National and there is a good reason for that. However in recent years we have had both a 100/1 winner with Mon Mome in 2009 and 33/1 in 2012 with Neptune Collonges. Therefore having a large priced runner in your 3 bets is a good idea.
  • Top weight carrying horses haven’t won since Red Rum with his weight of 11-5 so previous winners, Cheltenham Gold Cup winners and any other top weight carrying horse should be looked at carefully. They may place but the statistics show that winning seems unlikely.
  • Only three previous winners of the National had run at the Cheltenham Festival, however 8 out of the last 10 have either won or been placed over the Aintree course or finished in the top five in the Hennesy Gold Cup, Irish Grand National or the Welsh Grand National.
  • Previous course experience is key. The jumps at Aintree's Grand National are some of the hardest in the world so previous course and distance experience is essential and it is not advisable to pick a runner who has never attempted such a hard course or long distance before. Runners who have placed or won over these jumps should be looked at carefully.
  • Horses who fall a lot should be swerved at all costs. With Aintree’s reputation and it's many tough jumps it is no surprise that roughly half the runners who start the race never cross the finish line. If your pick is a regular faller who has fallen more than twice in the season give it a miss.
  • All the winners since the war have been between 8 and 12 years old and you should aim your selections at horses between these boundaries even if they have Course and Distance experience.
  • Stamina is a key component and out of the previous 10 winners they had all won a race under rules over at least three miles heading into the Grand National. Once again stayers and experience over long distances is key.
  • As well as stamina you need horses who have lots of experience over fences. The Aintree fences are the hardest in the world therefore runners who have raced at least 12 times over fences should be looked at carefully.
  • Look for runners who have had a top three finish in their last couple of starts and skip those that have been pulled up, fallen or don't give it their all in previous handicaps.
  • Softer ground often leads to large priced winners. Neptune Collonges won on Good to Soft at 33/1 in 2012, Mon Mome won in 2009 at 100/1 on Good to Soft, Red Marauder won in 2001 on heavy ground.
  • Since 2000 only 3 favourites have won the race: Don’t Push It (2010) at 10/1, Comply or Die (2008) 7/1 and Hedgehunter (2005) at 7/1.
  • As always Bookies know the apple and out of 17 of the last 21 races the winner started at 20/1 or less. If your horse is a 100/1 pick then there is a good reason for this so unless it meets all the other criteria I would ignore it. If it does meet most of the criteria then I would consider it as the "outsider" of the 3 bets I would be putting on. You can either put a small each way bet on just to be sure or use the place markets on Betfair where you can often get very good place odds on Grand National day.
  • Most bookmakers have special offers on the Grand National with many paying out on the first 5 places. Take advantage of the offers as if your outsider comes in 5th and you didn't find a 5 place payout bookmaker you will be kicking yourself in the shins for the rest of the day!

Grand National Betting Offers

Take advantage of the offers below to maximise your profits.

Sky Bet is paying out on the first 5 placed and will give you a free £10 bet for signing up.

They will also give you £5 of free bets a week if you bet £5 a week and for the Grand National if your runner doesn't run they will refund you your stake.

Bet 365 are also paying out on the first 5 places and refunding non runners. They also have a Channel 4 racing offer which if you back a winner at 4/1 or more on a televised UK or Irish race on Channel 4 you will get a free bet for the same stake on the next live race (up to £50).

Betfair are the most popular exchange for bettors to bet against each other. On big race days they have special markets such as 6 place payouts (I have even seen 10 place payout markets!).

You can also often get very good place only prices on their place markets if you don't want to back the horse to win. This might be ideal for your 3rd higher priced horse as you can get prices as good as win prices just for a place. Join and you will get a free £25 if you win or lose your bet.

Free Bets for Cheltenham 2013 Day 4

Free Bets for Cheltenham 2013 Day 4

By The UK Horse Racing Tipster

Yesterday was the day the bookies reclaimed all the money they had lost on previous days. With long shots winning big races and favourites coming nowhere it was a bad day for the punter.

It was especially bad for Champion Jockey AP Mcoy who hasn't had a single win yet and the big race was won by the Irish again! Oscar Whisky was nowhere and I have no clue what happened with him and the race was won by Solwhit.

I even know someone who laid Carrickboy at 75/1 on Betfair in the Byrne Group Plate! What a sting in the tail that would have been.

Today is the big race - the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase over 3m 2f 110y with a going currently of Good to Soft, Good in places.

There are a lot of class horses running from Long Run to Silviniaco Conti and Sir Des Champs. It will either be a day for the favourites or another day for the bookies! Maybe even AP will win on Sunnyhillboy!

If you haven't been snapping up the offers available then more fool you but you can still get free bet offers by joining the bookies on the right hand side and if you haven't joined Betfair yet then consider joining and laying some runners in the some of big runner events like the CGA Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup or the Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle.

I made my losses up by laying some runners as soon as I saw it wasn't going to be a day for favourites so a Betfair or BETDAQ account could be your saviour!

To join Betfair you will get a free £25 win or lose cash back offer when you sign up with the referral code LWFMEX4UJ.

Unlike the other bookies who have conditions that the money must be kept in your account or you cannot withdraw your winnings (refunds or free money until you have spent 4 times as much on other bet and so on.)

Betfair will allow you to bet, win or lose give you £25 that you can then withdraw to your account. Forget the odds of the horse this is a clear way to make £25 if you are not already on Betfair.

My own tips for day three of the Festival are:

JCB Triumph Hurdle:- Our Conor
Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle:- Ranjaan
Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle:- At Fishers Cross
Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase:- Silviniaco Conti
CGA Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup:- Salsify
Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle :- Gevrey Chambertin
Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase Challenge Cup:- Rody

Here are the AutoBOT's own top ranked horses (and 2nd ranked horses) for each race of the day. It includes not only the highest ranked horse and their ranking score (custom rating system I devised) but also the 2nd highest ranked horse as well.

13:30 - Far West Ranking 553 (2nd Diakali 338)
14:05 - Ranjaan Ranking 348 (2nd Midnight Game 291)
14:40 - At Fishers Cross Ranking 676 (2nd  Ballycasey 391)
15:20 - Silviniaco Conti Ranking 806 (2nd Long Run 743)
16:00 - Salsify Ranking 304 (2nd Cottage Oak 280)
16:40 - Ma Filleule Ranking 367 (2nd Salubrious 308)

Cheltenham 2013 – Tips and Offers – Day 3

Cheltenham 2013 – Tips and Offers – Day 2

By The UK Horse Racing Tipster

The Cheltenham Festival had a great second day with Sprinter Sacre showing off what a good horse he was by beating another great horse Sizing Europe by 19 lengths!

Timeform have already given him a rating of 183p are considering moving it up to 192p. If so he would become the highest-rated horse since the firm’s Chasers & Hurdlers series began in 1975/6 – moving him ahead of the likes of Moscow FlyerDesert Orchid and Kauto Star.

If this happens then the Irish-trained superstars of the 1960s, Arkle and Flyingbolt, are the only ones to have achieved a higher rating in Timeform‘s sixty-five year history.

What a great horse and I hope you all took up Coral's offer of a free £20 with their 1/1 price on Sprinter Sacre winning the race. Indeed it lost them over a £1 million and their website was out of action for over 6 hours after as everyone clambered to get their winnings. I know I couldn't access them until late last night.

Also for my own bets, if Boston Bob hadn't have fallen at the last fence and gone on to win we would have won the first four races. Instead we had to settle for 3.

If you haven't been snapping up the offers available then more fool you but you can still get free bet offers by joining the bookies on the right hand side and if you haven't joined Betfair yet then consider joining and laying some runners in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle at 15:20.

To join Betfair you will get a free £25 win or lose cash back offer when you sign up with the referral code LWFMEX4UJ.

Jewson Novices' Chase:- Captain Conan
Pertemps Final:- Shutthefrontdoor
Ryanair Chase:- Cue Card
Ladbrokes World Hurdle:- Oscar Whisky
Byrne Group Plate:- Cantlow Fulke
Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase:- Super Duty
Glenfarclas Handicap Chase:- Uncle Junior

The Free Bet System - Make Free Money at the Cheltenham Festival

The Free Bet System

The free bet system is best used in conjunction with the "Super Horse" system. If you haven't read that system then take a look at it now.

As many online bookmakers offer new members introductory offers to entice people to join their site they can be taken advantage of to make yourself free money.

For example when one of the horses in my "SUPER HORSE" table is running and especially when they are not running against another horse in the table then this system is great for making free money. The basic tenets of the system are:
  1. A horse in the Quality Horse table is running, preferably a really good horse such as Hurricane Fly, Sprinter Sacre, Sizing Europe, Sir Des Champs or Zarkandar.
  2. You join a new online bookmakers to take advantage of their free bet offer. Usually a free £25 bet  or refund if you lose etc.
  3. Remember the aim is not to make money on the price of the horse as the odds are going to be very low, for example Frankel used to sit in the win market at 1.10 - 1.15 as everyone knew he would win. Therefore the aim is to make the money from the free bet offer the bookies are offering you.
  4. You place the specified amount the bookmaker wants and make sure to read the Terms and Conditions so you don't fall through the cracks by doing something that would make your free bet void - see the list below for some of them.
  5. You place your bet, the horse wins and you claim your money.
  6. You withdraw your money.
There are many online bookmakers who offer "free bets" to tempt new customers onto their sites however I feel the best offer of them all is the free £25 that Betfair gives you when you sign up with the promo code LWFMEX4UJ. Whilst many online bookmakers make "free bet" offers you will often find that they have terms and conditions that say that:
  • They only refund the stake IF the bet is lost. Therefore if you win the bet you don't get anything!
  • They won't let you withdraw the free bet money once it is given out and you are only allowed to continue betting on their site with it.
  • The bet must be made at a price of 2.00 or above. No "sure things" are allowed on some sites.
  • You must sign up on a mobile phone.
  • Any other small print in the terms and conditions that make it easy for you to miss out on that "free money" you were expecting.
However what I like about Betfair is that they have changed their sign up policy and you can actually do all of the above which means that when a "sure thing" comes along it is a good time to sign up to the site as you won't have a better opportunity to win the bet, claim your free £25 plus any winnings you get back.

Of course there is no such thing as a "sure thing" and we have seen accidents such as Rewilding on the flat break his leg or Camelot failing to win the Triple Crown in 2012 so don't believe anyone who says that a horse is 100% going to win a race as there is always a chance that something could go wrong.

However by limiting the number of horses you use this system to you can reduce the possibility of an unforeseen "accident". Therefore although this system can be used on multiple betting sites - just pick one from the right hand side bar - this guide is specifically on how to sign up to Betfair and make your free £25 using their system.

A Step by Step Guide to Signing up to Betfair

Very rarely a horse comes along that looks "unbeatable" a "sure thing" so to speak. A horse like Frankel, Black Caviar or Big Buck's who seem to win whatever conditions are thrown at them.

In the upcoming Cheltenham Festival everyone is expecting Hurricane Fly to win the Champion Hurdle on the 12th of March and Sprinter Sacre to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase on the 13th of March.

For this example I am using (at the time of writing)  Sprinter Sacre who is about to run in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in a weeks time on the 13th of March).

Not only is this horse a great horse, it is one many other trainers are scared of, one that can jump with ease and run home like the wind.

Remember (and this goes with future horses as well) you have two possible outcomes when signing up to Betfair with the promo code: LWFMEX4UJ  when "sure things" like Spinter Sacre (or Frankel in the past) run.
  1. You sign up and deposit £25 into Betfair using the button at the bottom of the page. You then put it all on the hot favourite and he wins. You get your stake back of £25 plus any winnings minus a small percentage Betfair takes out of successful win singles bets. You will also receive into your Betfair account another £25 within a couple days of the race.
  2. You sign up and deposit £25 into Betfair using the button at the bottom of the page. You then put it all on the hot favourite and he loses. Betfair will put back the £25 into your account within a couple days of the race and you can then withdraw it back to your card.
Therefore whatever the outcome of the race you have lost nothing.

Who doesn't want to earn some free money in this times of austerity and cut backs by our ever so friendly government!

Therefore follow this step by step guide on placing your first bet on Betfair.

1. Click the following button which will take you to the Betfair sign up form.
2. Fill in the form leaving the promo code LWFMEX4UJ in the Promo Code box.

This is what gives you your free £25 so if you remove it you won't get it.

3. Click the "My Account" link if you see it or if you can see in the top right a "Deposit Funds into Betfair" link go to step 4.

4. Once registered go to the "Deposit Funds into Betfair" page which is top right of the page and add £25 into your Betfair account either from PayPal or a Debit or Credit card. It is all secure and encrypted so no there is no  need to worry about entering your card details on this page.

5. After your money is in the account and you are betting on the day of the race go to the "Horse Racing" section and select "Horse Racing - Todays Card".

If you are betting before the race you need to select ANTEPOST and then  the race from the list of those shown. The image I show below is the ANTEPOST market (before the race) and you can access this by selecting ANTEPOST, then the country (UK), then the date of the race e,g Cheltenham on the 13th of March and finally the race name which will be shortened to "Champion Chs".

6. If you are beting on the day you need to select "Horse Racing - Today's Card" Select the course you want (Cheltenham) and then the market you want. In the example I am giving it would be Cheltenham and the WIN market at 15:20 and the Champion Chs race.

There are always multiple markets per race, especially on big race days which means getting the market right. Luckily the win only market is the top one for the race time and won't have words such as Place, Reverse Forecast, 5 TBP or AvB after the market name.

7. Find the horse you want, in this case Sprinter Sacre who is top of the table. Now select the blue square nearest the pink one (Blue = Back, Pink = Lay).

The number on the square will be the best price currently available for that horse in the market at that point in time. You may see the numbers change constantly especially in a fast moving market.

Remember you are backing the horse to win so don't get forget it's blue to place win or place bets and pink to place a bet where you are acting as the bookie e.g providing the money for the backers to win if their horse wins.

8. A little window will open up on the right hand side where you can select your odds (price) and bet amount (stake) for the horse you want to bet on.

9. Under the odds column in the box either put in your own price (which may or may not be matched at the time of placing - but could be matched in the time up to the race start) or take the price that is currently in the box when it opened.

This will be the same as the number in the blue square you clicked initially. Personally I would try and put the price a couple of ticks above the current market price to see if it gets matched and then chose the "Take SP" option (see point 14 for details).

This means that if the number in the blue box was 1.31 I would put in 1.40 and if the price was 3.50 I would put in 3.70. The bigger the price the less chance it has of winning and the more you can raise your own bet offer - plus the more chance you will get your price matched if you raise it above the current price.

If you are early enough in the day there is a good chance that the prices will fluctuate a lot and you will get a match for your higher price.

At the moment the ANTEPOST price is 1.31 to win (not a lot!) therefore the aim of this system is to make money from the free bet offer NOT the price the horse is at (that is just a bonus).

10. Under the stake column enter 25.00 which is the amount you deposited into your account.

Remember you need to use the full £25 you deposited within 30 days to get back £25 from Betfair after the race.

11. After you have set your price and stake the screen should look something like this (forget the race names down the left hand side as those were the races on today not the day of the race I am referring to.

Also this is the Antepost betting so a lot of these horses won't run on the day - scared of Spinter Sacre most probably!

The prices and runners will change by the day and if you are going to bet on the day remember that you will need to look for the race under the "Horse Racing - Today's Card" menu option NOT the Antepost menu.

Betfair Betting Exchange

12. Press the "Place Bets" button.

13. If your bet has been matched then there is nothing else to do but watch the race and collect your winnings. Or if he loses reclaim your £25 back in a couple days time.

14. If your bet doesn't get matched straight away it will probably be down to one of two reasons:
  • The price has changed during the time it took you to place the bet and therefore your price is now too high or too low to find an opposing "layer" (pink button user) to match with.
  • You put in a price that was too low or too high to be matched at that point in time.
If the bet isn't matched straight away then you will then see some radio button options under the box:  "Cancel", "Keep" and "Take SP".

Now if you really want to try and get your own price matched then you could chose "Cancel" which means that if your price is not matched at the time of the race starting then your bet will be cancelled and your £25 will remain unused in your account.

For this system I would personally recommend hitting the "Take SP" button which means that when the race starts you will take the calculated starting price that Betfair comes up with.

This gives you enough time for your own price to be matched and if not you will still take the bet at the average price of the horse in the market for remaining unmatched bets..

Therefore the earlier you put your bet on the better.

The "Keep" option means that if your bet is not placed before the race then it will be kept during the race in the hope that it will get matched by someone doing "INPLAY" betting (e.g betting during the race).

For example the bet might get matched because your horse is right at the back of the field and there looks like little chance of it winning OR even worse it might fall over at an early fence and then everyone is going to want to LAY their WIN bets if they can as your horse has no chance of winning the race at all. If your bet is still on the market it is going to get snapped up immediatley. Therefore KEEPING your bet INPLAY is a double edged sword so be careful.

However if it doesn't get matched during the race then you will be left with your stake in your account and you will have to find another "sure thing" in 30 days to bet on.

For simplicities sake and to ensure your £25 stake is all used up use the "Take SP" option if your bet is not matched.

15. Watch the race if you want to. If it's not on TV then click the "live video" menu link in the grey menu above the prices and a pop-up box will open. You can then select the race you want and watch it live on your computer.

There won't be much speaking before the race unlike watching racing on the TV so don't think your headphones or speakers are broken if you don't hear anything before the race starts!

16. If your horse wins you will be able to withdraw your profits once the race has been over for a few minutes and all markets have been settled. That is unless there is a stewards enquiry for some reason.

I remember having to wait over an hour and a half due to the enquiry after the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe when Workforce won the race. However I would suggest waiting a couple of days until Betfair give you your free £25 and then withdraw the full lot at the same time e.g £25 stake + winnings + £25 Betfair sign up reward.

17. If your horse loses then just wait a couple of days for the free £25 to be added to your account and then withdraw it back to the Debit or Credit card you used to fund the account.

Remember when you are using PayPal to withdraw funds or to deposit funds into your Betfair account they will charge you a fee for the transaction.

18. Most importantly - tell all your friends about this amazing offer. Give out the referral code LWFMEX4UJ on Twitter, Facebook or Google+ or just email your friends a link to this page.

You can just copy and paste: http://www.ukhorseracingtipster.com/placing-bets-on-betfair/ and let all your mates share in on the free money offer.

So if you haven't already go ahead and click the following button to sign up to Betfair and deposit your initial £25.

Another good day of tips and a months worth of good results from the UK Horse Racing Tipster website

Another good day of tips and a months worth of good results from the UK Horse Racing Tipster website

By The UK Horse Racing Star

It was and early Good Friday this year.

Members of the UK Horse Racing Tipster club yesterday would have made over £246 in profit at only £2 stakes by folllowing all the bets across all systems.

Something I keep saying shouldn't be done but something that would have won anyone doing it nearly £4,000 at £2 stakes since June and £40k at £10 stakes.

Yesterday members had 37 different systems and 23 of them were in profit including the top one System LAY 228 which returned £52.52 by betting £2.00 stakes (Betfair minimum) on all tips in this system alone.

Also as well as the AutoBOT dioing it's job very well all the free tips I came up with and Frank Connell provided did very wel indeed.

My Free Tips included (sign up to the newsletter to get them by email)

A Place Double (that won)

Flamborough Breeze (2nd)
Call Me A Star (1st)

Other Free Tips

Al’s Memory (1st)

Also the 6th day of my Multi Day Place Accumulator (won) for my Members Extra Tips and the AutoBOT's free tip blog ( ukhorseracingautobot.blogspot.co.uk ) with Flamborough Breeze who came 2nd.

Also we had these winners and placers which include Frank Connell's tips

Win Singles

Empire Levant
Call Me A Star
Brave Spartacus
Cockney Sparrow
Fabrika

Placed Tips

White Diamond
Definite Ruby
Italian Master
Keki Buku
Bladoun

Also the top NAP'd horse of the day with 4 NAPS won it's race: Call Me A Star
Plus the AutoBOT's NAP of Al’s Memory also won it's race as well.

You can view the full results here:

http://www.ukhorseracingtipster.com/2013/03/tip-results-for-the-1st-of-march-2013

And as yesterday was the first day of the month we had all the results of the systems, their ROI and strike rate plus breakdowns by price range (e.g < 5.00, < 10.00, <50.00 etc)

Here are some quick links to the results pages so you can see the tips and system results for yourself.

Systems Profit and Loss using £2 Stakes.

Systems Profit and Loss using £10 Stakes.

And here is a current list of systems you should be following for the coming month (if you're a member) as they show the ROI, the strike rate and the chances of seeing the system in play the coming month.

Plus to top it off I came in the top 5 NAP tipsters yet again for the 2nd month running

TipsterStrike Rate (%)Profit / Loss
Western Mail (Alan Keyte)67.86%£46.20
The Star (Patrick Weaver)48.15%£-27.60
UK Horse Racing Tipster46.55%£34.40
Irish Post (Kevin Walsh)46.43%£84.70
Racing Post (RP Ratings)44.44%£88.80

You can see a full list of the NAP Tipster results here.

It is nice to see me in the top 3 tipsters for the month, after appearing 4th in the list last month and 9th in Januarys list - although I do go under the pseudo name of The UK Horse Racing Star (as you should know by me posting on this blog!) so I really came 2nd that month as well.

Also the 2nd tipster this month had a minus figure so really I should be 2nd depending on whether you ignore profit and go by strike rate alone.

If you did go by profit alone you would find a middle ranking tipster Stevie Roden from the Nottingham Evening Post who had a 37.04% strike rate but £345.50 in profit.

Remember you can join the system that everyone is talking about for a mere £25 per month or a tiny £100 per year.

You can also trial it for £15 for a whole month or even just become a member for a full day for £3 a time.

Once your day runs out you will be able to pay another £3 whenever you want and get another day's worth of tips. This is especially good for weekend bettors (like today) or those that just bet on the big race days like the Derby or the upcoming Cheltenham Festival or Grand National.

So what are you doing?

If you are not a member now then hop along to the website and check it out.

There's racing news every day from the UK to Ireland, from the USA to Australia and free tips from Twitter, newspapers, top tipsters and articles on picking horses in big races like the Grand National or the Arc d'Triomphe plus lots more!

Why don't you check it now and get your fill of free tips before deciding on whether to join fully.

Free tips should be up on the site right now and if you become a member the NAPS, Members Tips and my own extra tips are up as well.
